Escaping the Assembly

It was just another school day. A late night after-school event at the gym, where millions of other students and several teachers were gathered. The chairs were lined up on the sides of the basketball court, where a large area was open for the main show, whatever it was that was going on. He was standing at the doorway, rather than sitting, as it hadn't exactly started yet. He watched as one of the older teachers -- possibly a principal, or maybe the main teacher running the show; he wasn't really sure what -- walked up and began moving some of the chairs to the middle of the basketball court. This seemed to irritate the other teachers, who promptly began moving the chairs back and escorting the man out of the gym. He tried to help move them back as well, but was yelled at and complained to by the other teachers, for being out of his seat and getting into things. He wasn't exactly happy with that. He tried to explain his case about helping out, but the teachers just weren't having it, and continued fussing. Losing his patience, he simply turned and walked off, pushing open the double-doors and leaving the teachers, and several other students (at least 50% of the school, maybe more) behind, and walked off.

He looked around, and it seemed to be late. It was roughly around 7:14, and being around October-ish, it was already unbelievably dark by that time, and somewhat chilly. The lights around the school lit up only certain areas, and he began to walk toward the front of the school, to walk home. But something caught his attention, he saw someone else hiding out. He turned mid-step, and saw a young girl crouched up behind what appeared to be a worn down tree next to one of the school trailers.

He cautiously walked over to her, but as soon as she heard the leaves cracking beneath his feet, she turned to look at him, and then took off running. He had to know why she was hiding out though, and chased after her. A good 10, maybe 20 minutes of running around the school chasing after her, though it was surely only 5 at most, and he had finally caught up to her. She seemed to have given up on escaping, and sighed, slumping down to her knees. She was almost crying, sitting in probably the most uncomfortable of positions possible. He couldn't help but feel terrible at this point, and kneeled down next to her, taking off his own coat and draping it over her shoulders, and holding an arm over her.

"What's wrong? Why are you out here instead of in the gym?"

"There's nothing to be in there for..."

"Um. Other people? Better than being out here in the cold by yourself."

"I guess."

She was somewhat stubborn. But the teary-eyed look had him knowing immediately she wasn't avoiding the assembly for no reason. He felt so distraught for her that instinctively, all he knew to do was quickly hug her, as compassionately as he could, without scaring her. It had definitely startled her, and it took her a few seconds, but before long, she had wrapped her arms around him, and began crying unhesitantly. He closed his eyes and leaned his head up against hers, and with one hand, gently rubbed her back, between her shoulders.

"Shhh. It's alright. You're not alone anymore. Just sit here with me for a moment, it'll be okay."

With short breaths and sniffles, she softly replied; "Alright..."

He wasn't really sure who she was, but she seemed familiar to him. As if he knew her from somewhere, somehow, were it from his past, or maybe he just saw her one day before and her face was burned inside his head. He wasn't really sure... All he knew was that this was a very unusual moment, but one he wasn't exactly passing up even if he had the option.

Time had passed, perhaps 30-40 minutes, and the assembly was over. Neither of them had gone back in to the gym, but the cars were gathering in the parking lot to pick up their children, and the teachers were leaving. He lifted her up softly, and kept one of his arms wrapped around her, and walked with her over to one of the cars. He said a couple words to the driver, who promptly gave a nod, and unlocked the doors. He opened the back door, on the driver's side, and helped the girl into the car, who shifted over to the middle of the car. As soon as she was over far enough, he had gotten in after her, closing the door behind them. They hadn't seemed to have bothered with their seatbelts, for some reason; They may have put them on as soon as they sat down, but they didn't seem to be noticeable at this point.

They were talking quietly to each other, the driver in the front seemed to be spaced out and wasn't paying attention to a word of the conversation, only the road in front of the car. The girl was occasionally looking at him during their conversation, but he avoided eye contact as much as possible; It always made him feel awkward. However, he did find that he had his arm wrapped around her, over her shoulders, sort of holding her close to him. He wasn't sure why that made any sense when he was avoiding eye contact, or why he did it for that matter... But their conversation carried on for quite a while, about numerous things that makes it impossible to recall all of them.

About half-way through the car ride, perhaps 20 minutes, he had looked over at her. She was staring off ahead of the car, still talking softly, before she looked over, and noticed him staring. He seemed incapable of moving his eyes, almost tracing her light blonde hair, before he noticed she was looking right back at him. Her deep blue eyes almost staring directly into his own eyes, it was almost unsettling. He quickly turned away, but found himself turning to look back at her again...

Their eyes were locked on each other for some reason, and he saw her leaning in closer to him. He couldn't help but lean closer to her as well, staring into her dark blue eyes, before he noticed her lips were parted slightly... He knew exactly what was about to happen, but he wasn't scared. It was almost a rush; His mind was racing through numerous thoughts, and his heart was beating faster than a racehorse on the ¾-mark. He was almost -anxious- for this moment...

Their lips met, and the kiss had been sealed between them. The moment seemed endless to him, it was almost like the world had completely collapsed beneath their feet, -- despite both of them being in a car, -- and time stood still. It was a sense of perfection, everything else idn't matter.

And then, his eyes opened. He was laying down in his bed, and he was staring at the ceiling. It was all just a dream, and to make matters worse, he couldn't remember who she was. Her face was glued inside his mind, the situation playing over and over and over, but he couldn't piece it together. It was like a puzzle; He was meant to solve it, but he didn't have enough of the pieces... He just wished he could play it over again. Sometimes dreams were his favorite way of living.
